1. Install OpenRefine locally

Follow the instruction in the video 5 of lesson 1

2. Load the cleardpermits2014.xls from the course material.

The data come from the city of Toronto open data portal. Please use the file provided in the course materials. 

Permits data are updated on a regular basis, new file might not match the course material one. If you use data directly from the city of Toronto portal, you might encounter parsing error with some files. OpenRefine will create extra columns at the end of the project. This is due to inconsistent formatting in the file.

3. How many rows do you count?

4. Rename the project to Building Permits 2014

5. Export in Excel format.
